70's GLASSES AND SUNGLASSES - GO BIG OR GO HOME

In the 1970s, new borders were crossed. Taboos broken, traditions were tossed aside – and in design everything got bigger. The shoes were stacked, the bottoms were belled - mens and womens alike. And glasses, too responded to the inflation of the nations.

From the mean streets to the disco, Scorsese to Saturday Night Fever, the 70s combined gritty realism with glitz and glamour, to view through the lens of all-night parties and political hangovers. Hollywood became Hollyweird; Hippies joined the scene and jumped on screen, peepers hidden behind enormous colorful sunnies.

MADE IN THE SHADE, FUN IN THE SUN

Style let it all hang out. Eyewear was big and bold, staking its territory across half the face. Lenses were tinted with bright and subtle hues - day and night. Acetate tended towards two-tone and gradient tones, while metal frames shone silver and gold rimmed. Sunglasses were massive and mirrored, in playful colors and unique shapes, the better to pair with your mini or maxi skirt.

Think Jack Nicholson's aviator shades -- and Jackie O's sunglasses -- always oversized, be they oval, square sunglasses, or round. Or imagine -- the black shield sunnies worn by Yoko Ono, masking her from the world and later appearing on her album covers. At Lunettes Selection, we have the best in vintage unworn glasses that call back to classic style moments from icons like these.
