Part of the mission of Lunettes Selection Berlin is to nurture and support artisanal handwork traditions. That’s not just a consideration for our carefully chosen selection of frames and lenses, but also when it comes to the very materials the glasses are made from. And natural horn is a truly special substance worth a second look. It’s one of the oldest and most venerated raw materials used in the manufacturing of eyewear, and is likely the most elaborate in our assortment.
What makes horn frames so exceptional? The way the surface gleams in the light, and the warm, pleasing feel of the natural material are incomparable. Every piece of horn is one-of-a-kind, and expresses itself through an individual ‘fingerprint.’
This distinctive coloring makes horn particularly elegant and unique. Horn glasses generally come in classic tones like beige, dark brown, and black. Our models push the spectrum a bit further, presenting grey and anthracite tones, as well as varied gradations ranging from brown to the lightest nearly white. Coloration and texture are constantly varied, and no frame is exactly like any other. In terms of design, we have a number of options to choose from:
Our line of horn frames are created for us in a small manufactory, and always finished by hand. They have a lightness far beyond what acetate can offer — yet are surprisingly strong and flexible. Try them for yourself, and discover the comfort and style of our horn glasses and sunglasses. Horn is also an ideal alternative for people with skin sensitivities; the natural material is completely hypoallergenic.
All of the unworn vintage frames at Lunettes Selection are environmentally friendly, because they limit production of new goods, and keep valuable items in use rather than disposed of. But our horn selection, untouched ‘dead stock’ from the 1970’s, is especially sustainable due to its natural source — buffalo horn.
